<br />
I have decided to start dyeing with what is readily available in New Zealand. Sure, Kool-Aid produces some cool colours, and its simple to use because it has citric acid in it already, but guess what? So does Jelly. (330, E330).<br />
<br />
I had a lace skein that I bought for a secret santa gift, so I did a little snooping to find out what colours she likes, and she knits with a decent amount of varying pink shades. So I decided to give it a go.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8shK_hAWkn8kpw2S7E4unAopWaexZbOzcxI2HaQtPW9hSi7B-aRZ-uP5k1MfzizP3RN59ESwne68rC-hPduRaEdDyZMveR4SH3K5XcYRU6FHl-WugGj3-XSg4uO9DgylDzddiEnL6snS4/s1600/IMG_1558.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8shK_hAWkn8kpw2S7E4unAopWaexZbOzcxI2HaQtPW9hSi7B-aRZ-uP5k1MfzizP3RN59ESwne68rC-hPduRaEdDyZMveR4SH3K5XcYRU6FHl-WugGj3-XSg4uO9DgylDzddiEnL6snS4/s640/IMG_1558.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I soaked the skein in a bowl of warm water with a little citric acid for half an hour while I prepped everything else.<br />
<br />
I put down a baby changing pad (the thin soak pads) on the table, and covered it with glad wrap and spread the skein out on it. Seperate the yarn as much as possible while still leaving a workable area.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Tw3mNNtOK81I6hdPz8XJUPzftXhpXXCUV7nN06j1S75wRAsta12F51wMvl9mFq9f1eGInifVdqCYMQDlD49hKY_iHwKdOgg1VilGO7kMfDyCeziGiCTUB1R4VKrJZumYKcLabB2ig7jY/s1600/IMG_1561.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Tw3mNNtOK81I6hdPz8XJUPzftXhpXXCUV7nN06j1S75wRAsta12F51wMvl9mFq9f1eGInifVdqCYMQDlD49hKY_iHwKdOgg1VilGO7kMfDyCeziGiCTUB1R4VKrJZumYKcLabB2ig7jY/s640/IMG_1561.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used 4 dessert spoons of each colour. I put them in a large dip bowl and mixed it up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijCm-a_kaG37JshugWXEONuJ5964wKzQcBfdZZoKG5WSmkxQ6nlCRtweaWApjDzU-8qjC0iEYjmH1D3w8xZM5zv3oIsmsDhPfynT3AYg6Jzut5OoR4zL8jLjViYtcSdjMoZWqLGsz48IAd/s1600/IMG_1559.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijCm-a_kaG37JshugWXEONuJ5964wKzQcBfdZZoKG5WSmkxQ6nlCRtweaWApjDzU-8qjC0iEYjmH1D3w8xZM5zv3oIsmsDhPfynT3AYg6Jzut5OoR4zL8jLjViYtcSdjMoZWqLGsz48IAd/s640/IMG_1559.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Using a spoon, I sprinkled the jelly all over the yarn, pressing it with my hand. (Be careful to not muddy the yarn, just press it and pull your hand off).<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Over the skein ties, I put a lot of colour and pressed it heavily to get it through as many layers of yarn as I could.<br />
<br />
Flip the yarn over and repeat on the other side.<br />
<br />
Wrap the yarn up in the cling wrap and place in a microwave safe bowl. I heated it for 2 mins, over 4x 30 second bursts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBxF-FIkgsioNl79rX8gbbu_9ZK4Xl3IvVOwdE3VgeLJNfohsidUqljMS3yZIp5GljVEW97PsIHTqDsdLbCKMgoQrLi0-Kw2h-3ea1ok8WnMPfLibYDqpNvRrjxWE15mwaj-K8Rl9_U8Pu/s1600/IMG_1571.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBxF-FIkgsioNl79rX8gbbu_9ZK4Xl3IvVOwdE3VgeLJNfohsidUqljMS3yZIp5GljVEW97PsIHTqDsdLbCKMgoQrLi0-Kw2h-3ea1ok8WnMPfLibYDqpNvRrjxWE15mwaj-K8Rl9_U8Pu/s640/IMG_1571.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I left it to cool down to room temperature (it took about 2 hours), then I pulled a little bit out from the end of the cling wrap and rinsed it to check the colour had set. It had, so I dumped it in the sink. This is the point where you need to take the time to get it right. Jelly is full of sugar and it makes the yarn sticky. You need to be careful that you don't do anything that felts it, but that sugar needs to come out.<br />
<br />
If the colour runs, put it back int he microwave (or however you heat set your yarn). Even with all the jelly crystals and lumps of jelly through the yarn, the colour was still set and my water was still clear, so don't just assume that its the excess jelly. There was only a hint of colour when a couple of actual globs were rinsed out. Almost light enough for me to wonder if I had imagined it.<br />
<br />
So, in the sink covered in sugary globules...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiducrqEC6o2kTiSuOgo36nLvB0R61-PB51PkJ8n69AQ0qSj0vkD1R08c1X8y6p-dp4ZVwT00V5f_MvoxcB-sdJp71Kh7Lct4_YbSqkdZ05F1PgHCC2aMRqN2Bdhbs8rFaAX7fDxMKYQqes/s1600/IMG_1572.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiducrqEC6o2kTiSuOgo36nLvB0R61-PB51PkJ8n69AQ0qSj0vkD1R08c1X8y6p-dp4ZVwT00V5f_MvoxcB-sdJp71Kh7Lct4_YbSqkdZ05F1PgHCC2aMRqN2Bdhbs8rFaAX7fDxMKYQqes/s640/IMG_1572.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwfXEkREgRgUR519j08Mz4avCIz_VHK1s1qjcvWAhkwjbWiLxxXU8A-VB2_Op5tFOxnEflOfdHlJFQsz15mYq0iB7I0DTIHZRqm4kvoiso77VnxZVzBIOlHoRPpa9M4OfBWbQT0-WjMqPp/s1600/IMG_1574.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwfXEkREgRgUR519j08Mz4avCIz_VHK1s1qjcvWAhkwjbWiLxxXU8A-VB2_Op5tFOxnEflOfdHlJFQsz15mYq0iB7I0DTIHZRqm4kvoiso77VnxZVzBIOlHoRPpa9M4OfBWbQT0-WjMqPp/s640/IMG_1574.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />At this point I sat in the bathroom in front of the sink and ran the yarn under lukewarm water for 10 minutes. You will need to check and search for the sugar globules but don't rip them out. Just work them under the water and they will drop away.<br />
<br />
After the 10 minute rinse, I let it soak in a wool wash (I use EcoStore) for half an hour.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheGIGeCH7KQWCoh_ddnTlISZVE2oND-P2algIPAaspYZMesrWcJn3vDuIPUsS7IxDk3-0sNVk-3_qW5i7mu7rxu61iJFUx8Mx8AO6UgJ52UqSWjfkmIGJmo6kO5Q6JYCZYX_dTZsfOgV-A/s1600/IMG_1576.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheGIGeCH7KQWCoh_ddnTlISZVE2oND-P2algIPAaspYZMesrWcJn3vDuIPUsS7IxDk3-0sNVk-3_qW5i7mu7rxu61iJFUx8Mx8AO6UgJ52UqSWjfkmIGJmo6kO5Q6JYCZYX_dTZsfOgV-A/s640/IMG_1576.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After the soak, I gently squeezed the excess water out and hung it out to dry.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhe6hrtSvdiodkMl79zaiXrdOFRn596JE_1WdZnJ8RZlOTdUocc2hq5FqQhIHbg069-Zucnj69b3FTdujMEMlGBhi6MyBkZWKfCsRdE8HeAkkvMZcctykWMV8nBwZZFSDrbTIbWxFUM09m/s1600/IMG_1589.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhe6hrtSvdiodkMl79zaiXrdOFRn596JE_1WdZnJ8RZlOTdUocc2hq5FqQhIHbg069-Zucnj69b3FTdujMEMlGBhi6MyBkZWKfCsRdE8HeAkkvMZcctykWMV8nBwZZFSDrbTIbWxFUM09m/s640/IMG_1589.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Once it was dry, I twisted it back up and I have a super soft, gorgoeusly tonal coloured yarn.<br />

<br />
I would not recommened this for the feint of heart!! Dealing wth the sugar aspect is at least half the process, but to be hoenst, I would rather deal with the sugar than have to wait for KoolAid to arrive form overseas (and its a lot pricier, because I have to figure out the cost in NZD, then get someone to be my middle man, then pay shipping. Which isn't cheap). And I can pick up jelly boxes 2 for $1 on special.<br />
<br />
One day I will buy 'real' dye, but for now, I really love how this turned out!!!<br />

Feeling a bit better. Spent yesterday afternoon finishing Poppys head, and have just now finished the neck and shoulders. It is a surprisingly quick knit. Although I credit a lot of my speed to my County Plus app which marks my rows, and my Kindle that holds my pdfs, so I don't need to constantly re print my patterns.<br />
<br />
<br />
Poppys head is stuffed and am about to hold the arm stitches and get to work on the body.<br />

I was hoping that by the time I got to today, that I would have been able to get an 'In My Queue' done, and a blog post. But just nothing.<br />
<br />
However, I have been skeining off mini skeins for a round robin mini skein swap for making hexipuffs, and I want to try a few different ways of dyeing, so you will be getting a couple of posts on that. I have lots of pictures of things I have done, ready to blog... but I can't get the words out of my head onto the screen.<br />
<br />
So, sorry, but you will have to wait until Tuesday for an interesting blog post.<br />
<br />
In the mean time...Some mini skeins and my boys outside on the first beautiful day we have had in a while.<br />

Isn't she adorable?<br />

<br />
Why yes, this is being added to my Christmas gift list... How did you know?<br />
<br />
What are you working on for Christmas gifting? Are you making your pressies this year, just some of them, or none at all? It's really tempting to just buy people things, but I love creating things out of sticks (or a hook) and some string. There is something amazing about it.<br />
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429628273962046080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6041005553986880456.post-26510971007694122252013-09-28T07:30:00.000+12:002013-10-07T11:10:49.380+13:00Gardening Fun2 years ago, our backyard looked like this. (Which, trust me, looks SO MUCH better than when we moved in. I really don't think the previous owners knew they had a backyard...)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When we were looking at the house, I saw that and told Mr. Foster that I wanted it to be a herb garden. That was the only thing it could be. Right by the front door (see the landing with the gate on the left?) and its gets all day sun (like the backyard), but it was close enough to the house that I could still run out for herbs when it was raining. Plus they look and smell amazing when they come back in Spring!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So we did...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS1BKD-fGE5eEwmG73IKTqCpR7flBdiJewECCBj1wmmyCAgJnCgZbMOXAnLw_EZd1ygVHyZmMJz7BtweIAB9vdmjb6592k4Ibi4iIqnlyJUdHsQSdMBPtm6bsBh5V1lVxzfzehle9OC3PI/s1600/garden7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS1BKD-fGE5eEwmG73IKTqCpR7flBdiJewECCBj1wmmyCAgJnCgZbMOXAnLw_EZd1ygVHyZmMJz7BtweIAB9vdmjb6592k4Ibi4iIqnlyJUdHsQSdMBPtm6bsBh5V1lVxzfzehle9OC3PI/s1600/garden7.jpg" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Keen eyes will notice the unrestrained mint on the top left. Yeah. That was a mistake. However, the sage and rosemary together in the top middle, garlic chives out the far top right, pizza thyme on the bottom left and lemon balm at bottom right were most definitely not. OMG I had never tried or even heard of lemon balm before I put it in. When we were picking herbs, I was picking ones that I actually eat, not just herbs to have. I don't eat parsely or corriander, so they were no gos!. But this lemon balm is just amazing on chicken and roast carrots. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpeU08qIBGo8mVs_5fwkf3O_Uo1C80uQwNrvgCD6EYAINLkLW3txqAyHr9jdVhyASJee8p4Iofum9wTln8LKTPZrbqvf0tOu9ECm0e08V7iL-dvfptFI-rtQ15L4fkPaYqbHlDh__4tGel/s1600/garden5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpeU08qIBGo8mVs_5fwkf3O_Uo1C80uQwNrvgCD6EYAINLkLW3txqAyHr9jdVhyASJee8p4Iofum9wTln8LKTPZrbqvf0tOu9ECm0e08V7iL-dvfptFI-rtQ15L4fkPaYqbHlDh__4tGel/s1600/garden5.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Keen eyes will notice that the mint got ripped out and placed in an old washing machine tub piece. That took us 6 months to get all the shoots that kept popping up. You will also notice that we replaced the mint spot with more chives. That is because over spring/summer we ate all our other chives bush and had none until Spring again. So 2 chives bushes should keep us going, we hope. They are delicious in a potato salad too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Problem is, even though I hate parsely, I am a sucker for a dying plant. Even if there is no hope, I feel like I need to plant it to give it a chance, rather than just throw it out. We had a dying parsely plant that we had bought for my mum for Christmas, but decided to give her a lemon balm cutting instead. So it didn't get much love. But I planted it to give it a one-last-shot at like as a living herb. Then this happened. It has done this twice in 9 months. I chopped it down to almost nothing about 12 weeks ago.... Luckily we have friends who love parsely, and take our shopping bags-full clippings. But this bad boy is getting donated to Squish's daycare. They are doing a lot of gardening this spring/summer, so the least I can do is deliver them <strike>The Hulk</strike> this parsely shrub. It is dome shaped. It is as deep and high as it is wide. We don't look after it. Apparently it just likes our backyard and wants to consume it. If you don't hear from me again, check the parsely's alibi.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

I have been using this pattern for my 8ply scraps, and have been keeping my 4ply scraps for my Beekeepers Quilt.<br />
<br />
<br />
I have been making a fair few of these. I can get about 8-10 done an hour. Knowing my luck I will have it done just as the weather comes nice. I will be making these hexagons in random colours, then stitching them together with solid black to give them a border.<br />
<br />
<br />
Current count: 27 - and about to sit down specifically to make more while Mr. Foster is playing GTA 5.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XYW0-mbH-UQ/Ujnq6cEv37I/AAAAAAAAPfU/FzvzsLgDCd4/s1600/IMG_4259.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XYW0-mbH-UQ/Ujnq6cEv37I/AAAAAAAAPfU/FzvzsLgDCd4/s1600/IMG_4259.JPG" height="400" width="283" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I am using some Blue Sky Alpacas organic cotton that I found at the salvation army, and am using a 3mm hook.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZThQOYrIYICMtwc6ZY-0CKrM-ENbXJl45hNaj-gESEnJKBxbZS0bOSBps3DwBrh89nqsMUi8pvPgPP5ONMiS34WYMovcE8Um4mawMXoJ3KGK520GKCcMTjo23zdGYfHVjcEdeq5P9hOKZ/s1600/DSCF0149+(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZThQOYrIYICMtwc6ZY-0CKrM-ENbXJl45hNaj-gESEnJKBxbZS0bOSBps3DwBrh89nqsMUi8pvPgPP5ONMiS34WYMovcE8Um4mawMXoJ3KGK520GKCcMTjo23zdGYfHVjcEdeq5P9hOKZ/s1600/DSCF0149+(2).JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
If there is enough yarn, I will be making 2 of these, but I am considering making one 'big sister' and one 'little sister' because they will be Christmas gifts for the girls who live next door. (Squish's best friend and her little newborn sister).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA8-tHa2MpbzXfxvd819eXjn5Wgw4fLuWPVBWZ7WdNzQrddwqVoN0UDUnc2AVwQHGMjM2DSrK87P2wF76mtffwOkXUxQ7Q0GxhlE3PfYW8a_zzSODQzZK9Nv3OHwQty8QVY5OSTbAo071h/s1600/IMG_20130109_113037.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA8-tHa2MpbzXfxvd819eXjn5Wgw4fLuWPVBWZ7WdNzQrddwqVoN0UDUnc2AVwQHGMjM2DSrK87P2wF76mtffwOkXUxQ7Q0GxhlE3PfYW8a_zzSODQzZK9Nv3OHwQty8QVY5OSTbAo071h/s1600/IMG_20130109_113037.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I will also be making a bunch of clothing for them so they can change their clothes. Probably just some simple coats and dresses, but in a few different colours.<br />
<br />
Update will come when I am further along (almost finished the head so far).Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429628273962046080noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6041005553986880456.post-37261849178518570072013-09-20T08:39:00.000+12:002013-10-07T18:12:02.660+13:00In my Queue<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Feeties!!!</span></span><br />

But I am a little ahead this year, so far, so good. I have a list of people and a list of gifts I would like to give/make them, a list of realistic gifts for them, and a list of last minute as will be likely gifts.<br />
<br />
But I just started on a Christmas gift today. There will be lots of dolls this year. Lots of little girls to make for, and next year can just be more clothes for them.<br />
<br />
No pictures yet, as it is just a circle of the head so far, but Will definitely add some as it begins to take shape!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429628273962046080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6041005553986880456.post-86937774463031344492013-09-14T10:16:00.000+12:002013-11-19T15:06:00.343+13:00Actual PlacematsAnother hobby of mine is digital scrapbooking. Standard scrapbooking is great, but I have found that I never use things I love, because I don't want to use them then want to make something else with them. SO I always end up using things that are ok, but I just don't love.<br />
<br />
However, with digital scrapbooking, I can use the same thing 20 times if I want. Yeah it doesn't have the same depth, but you can do things like add shadows and distort things to make them 'appear' to come off the page, so, while not perfect, it still gives a lot of freedom and you can add as many ribbons as you like, but still have it fit cleanly into a plastic sleeve in an album.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtMrYKkNwSQ7tqVGs5iPTT7FI65Lk2CpXp82njYnQNm1DAFYxDThLGopb_NebfaSzaJp-s5Gz_X_K74emRcqbdXyhW7rZ8DSkVLpMvxok3DJTBf79qBDE2C5RV1jhBqWFeK-jNGQbSvVMp/s1600/AliceB+-+In+the+Moon+for+Love+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtMrYKkNwSQ7tqVGs5iPTT7FI65Lk2CpXp82njYnQNm1DAFYxDThLGopb_NebfaSzaJp-s5Gz_X_K74emRcqbdXyhW7rZ8DSkVLpMvxok3DJTBf79qBDE2C5RV1jhBqWFeK-jNGQbSvVMp/s1600/AliceB+-+In+the+Moon+for+Love+2.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I decided it was high time we had placemats in our house - I was getting sick of using teatowels and junk mail when we had hot plates. So I whipped up these placemats (A4 size) and got the printed out at Warehouse Stationery.<br />

<br />
I glued them to the same placemats I got from spotlight that I used for the <a href="http://amiefosterblog.blogspot.co.nz/2013/09/handmade-gift.html" target="_blank">chalkboards</a>. I also glued an entire piece of felt to the back of it to prevent table scratching.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhySkBbYBnXOax6f9u4hcbcDu69tEyrmXpAClhmfvdWJRp7G3xHiAtdKlxVYp2q1Ww773kCQRLyQRkEOwq71KEyHC1QXG2fKuvzPwEpB6Dd5_vZw6R27mWt2Pa5GTMzZRP0XkzVfQpkI0cz/s1600/DSCF0233.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhySkBbYBnXOax6f9u4hcbcDu69tEyrmXpAClhmfvdWJRp7G3xHiAtdKlxVYp2q1Ww773kCQRLyQRkEOwq71KEyHC1QXG2fKuvzPwEpB6Dd5_vZw6R27mWt2Pa5GTMzZRP0XkzVfQpkI0cz/s1600/DSCF0233.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
While I glued to position the paper, I was planning to Mod Podge the tops, but Squish decided he wanted to use the dinosaurs for that lunch time, and lo and behold, sauce ended up on it. So I will just use these non Mod-Podged placemats for a few more weeks, then peel the paper off and mod podge a new design on top.<br />
<br />
<br />
Squish got 2 placemats (dinosaurs and football - as an attempt to get him to be more interested in dinner, he gets to choose his placemat), Mr. Foster got blue stars and I got a black, white and yellow flowery design. Mr. Foster often ends up using the football one though because Squish likes to use daddy's star one. I might change them up next time but will likely just stick with the same design. I am considering using them as end of year gifts for kids this year at Christmas time.<br />

I love making things for people and often gift handmade items, but it has come to the point where I feel bad if I don't put in some handmade effort into everyones gift. I know that it's kind of irrational, but I am the crafty one that makes cool handmade stuff.<br />
<br />
So with the Party on the Saturday, I decided on Friday to make something (I know, right?) I had to pick something awesome (because they definitely warrant more effort. They are very craft worthy, appreciate it and always treat my handmade stuff well). <br />
<br />
So what do you craft for a 3 year old boy who is in the destruciton-zone and that can be made in less than 24 hours?<br />
<br />
Turns out chalkboards can be done in that time frame.<br />
<br />
I headed to Spotlight to get my bits and pieces. I grabbed 6 scrapbooking placemats (A4 sized with rounded corners), a foam paint roller, some blue chalkboard paint and some wooden craft letters to spell his name.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ZW0TTGDH7rd-Q-cOP0b-NAykQLi5bRn9LJFdSNazCrke8Wf_uhPq-LWa5-rNsPhyphenhyphenu0ua_Dr1J5UYuZHjyhK-HtKZAlRJtXm_aVVGb8AdXXkY9mxw5gkS4j6mFLV-nR0QOsn-hEczh3yd/s1600/DSCF0228.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ZW0TTGDH7rd-Q-cOP0b-NAykQLi5bRn9LJFdSNazCrke8Wf_uhPq-LWa5-rNsPhyphenhyphenu0ua_Dr1J5UYuZHjyhK-HtKZAlRJtXm_aVVGb8AdXXkY9mxw5gkS4j6mFLV-nR0QOsn-hEczh3yd/s1600/DSCF0228.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4zKripm1j7_1cmTBpS6jsoYq5oXSm415ritF_BphIg7rNzKiNvHor4n0p-UmAbnNYG_3P6pImiSz3dRS6QOSTJLasGlESuNa-hnrTl3wzhmIvCxFxChZZsZaydinVxK1NTyUFQ84TS6kK/s1600/DSCF0227.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4zKripm1j7_1cmTBpS6jsoYq5oXSm415ritF_BphIg7rNzKiNvHor4n0p-UmAbnNYG_3P6pImiSz3dRS6QOSTJLasGlESuNa-hnrTl3wzhmIvCxFxChZZsZaydinVxK1NTyUFQ84TS6kK/s1600/DSCF0227.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I got home and did a single chalkboard coat on each placemat. I painted them 2 at a time on newspaper, then put them outside in direct sunlight to dry while I did the next 2, then the last 2.<br />
<br />
By the time I took the last 2 out, the first ones were dry (theoretically, they should have been left 6 hours in between coats, according to the paint instructions, but I didn't have that much time and they were dry, so what the hell right?)<br />
Took the first 2 back in and rotated through again putting on a second coat.<br />
<br />
Left them all in direct sun until the sun set, then put the on the dining table until the morning (they were long dry by the time I brought them in, but why stack and risk it if they can be safely left out longer?).<br />
<br />
In the morning I used a hot glue gun to glue on the letters for his name on one of the boards. So now they can use the 6 boards to make any arrangement and to fit any space they like, and one has his name to put in any corner or top, bottom, side etc.<br />
<br />
We included some chalk and an eraser (Crayola chalk pack), plopped it in a gift bag and walked round the corner to the party.<br />
<br />
When I got there, I was asked a few times what I made and was shown off as the lady who made the felt wrestling belt and the fabric covered canvases for him. Very glad I didn't default to a storebought firetruck (was considering it extremely hard)<br />
<br />
<br />
Anyway, check them out! I am really happy with how they turned out and we have at least 3/4 of a container of blue chalkboard paint to do something with. Probably make a chalkboard wall for Squish around the house somewhere. Or keep it for when we make him a playhouse.<br />

<br />
Mr. Foster and I are planning our wedding (yes, Foster is not yet my name, but I will be taking his surname when we marry, so for simplicity sake, I use it now). I will be knitting my wedding dress (and not in white... a gorgoeus sea coloured blue/green.)<br />
<br />
However, once I started planning, I was thinking about all the things I could knit and crochet and stitch, and the list just kept growing. So in terms of keeping my sanity - I forgot every idea I had except for my wedding dress and crocheted parasols (I'm not a 'flowers' girl).<br />
<br />
Instead, I have decided to make myself one new gorgeous amazing self-indulgent thing for our anniversary each year.<br />
<br />
For our first anniversary, I will be making and wearing <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/southern-skies" target="_blank">Southern Skies</a>. I will be going all out on the yarn and beads, and I will actually make it with the intention of passing it down as an heirloom to our son and his spouse if/when they choose to marry as a wedding gift, to then pass on down again and again.<br />
<br />
I am trying to figure out what I could make to go with it that would be an appropriate dating tool with a list of who had it before each gifting.<br />
At the moment I am considering a photo album with images of the actual knitting process (including all the gory bits - like the blocking), then include a final photo of me wearing it for our 1 year anniversary (and any other special occasions I choose to wear it). I will choose an album big enough for future generations to add their own photos of receiving and wearing it.<br />
I will include a letter deatiling how long it took to make, and problems I had (eg. dropped stitches I had to find, needle coming out, how many times I had to restart etc), where the yarn and beads came from. Also care instructions for keeping it amazing for years to come.<br />
<br />
I would then place all of this (photo album, letter, care instructions and shawl) into a small hope chest to be passed down with everything else.<br />
<br />
I would love to know what you think. Is there a better wya to include all the information that future generations might be intersted in? Or have I got it right?<br />
<br />
<br />
Here is <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/southern-skies" target="_blank">Southern Skies by Audry Nicklin</a>. The images are not mine and I do not claim them in any part as my own.<br />

I bought 3 books that had been in a wishlist for a while. <a href="http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/Mini-Cross-Stitch-Michael-Powell/9781844486571" target="_blank">Twenty to Make Mini Cross Stitch by Michael Powell</a>, <a href="http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/Doodle-stitching-Aimee-Ray/9781600590610" target="_blank">Doodle Stitching by Aimee Ray</a> and <a href="http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/Doodle-Stitching-Motif-Collection-Aimee-Ray/9781600595813" target="_blank">Doodle Stitching - The Motif Collection by Aimee Ray</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
Book Depository is amazing. The price on the site is exactly what you pay. No hidden shipping and handling costs or insurance. They have free worldwide delivery, and its very quick too.<br />
<br />
I got my first book 10 days after the order was despatched, and the other 2 books, 12 days after they were despatched.<br />
<br />
I have a fair sized wishlist now and have plans on a lot more books coming my way from them.<br />
<br />
In the meantime - check out my new books!!!<br />

I found these images on Wikimedia Commons - (public domain) <a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Images_from_Geographicus&filefrom=1859+U.S.+Coast+Survey+Map+of+St.+George+Sound%2C+Florida+Panhandle+-+Geographicus+-+StGeorgesSound-uscs-1859.jpg%0A1859+U.S.+Coast+Survey+Map+of+St.+George+Sound%2C+Florida+Panhandle+-+Geographicus+-+StGeorgesSound-uscs-1859.jpg#mw-category-media" target="_blank">donated</a> by <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/" target="_blank">Geographicus</a>. I may have spent an unaturally long time going through all these maps because, if I had my way, we would have an entire wall dedicated to a collage of these maps. My personal favourites are the celestial and astronomical maps. <br />
<br />
So, I got these 2 printed out as A2 posters for Mr. Foster.<br />
<br />

I printed this as an A3 size and framed it for my dad. Taking it to him this evening, hope he likes it!<br />

<br />
My brother is 2 weeks out from starting his training as a paramedic, so I want to find some anatomy style drawings (think Da Vincis autopsy and anatomy sketches) and make him a collage poster. He would love that.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06429628273962046080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6041005553986880456.post-11775052304620498072013-08-30T08:00:00.000+12:002013-12-05T22:09:43.052+13:00In my QueueCrochet shawls and shawlettes this week.<br />

At any one point in time, there could be anything from cat hair to toddler-dropped food, dirt tracked through the house, ash and wood shavings form being close to the fireplace plus anything that the little one brought home from daycare (like glitter. I am really really sick of glitter). I usually vacuum twice a day, but for some reason the carpet just likes being covered in whatever. Not ideal for wandering yarn.<br />
<br />
I found these bowls at The Warehouse. Only $3 each and they are just beautiful. I bought 3 of them, 2 are being used as yarn bowls and the 3rd is holding all my bits and pieces... Snips, stitch markers, cable needles, Knit Pro size tags and cable ends (in an altoids tin), my button container (currently small because I just had a clean out), and my travel-craft tin that will be decorated soon - also an Altoids tin. Sent from America, hese tins are amazing and so handy for everything!!<br />
<br />
The bowls are a gorgeous aqua blue and I tempted to get more, just because. (Or in case one breaks at some point in time, I will have a back up - that is a fair enough reason... right?)<br />
<br />
<br />
Accurate colour is in the 'everything' image. The close up shows the nice darker ring.<br />
I got the <a href="http://vintagepurls.co.nz/measures-snips-darning-needles/907-hiya-hiya-puppy-snips.html" target="_blank">Kitty Snips</a> from <a href="http://vintagepurls.co.nz/" target="_blank">Vintage Purls</a>.<br />
I got the wooden embroidery needle case from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/aplacetolaymythread" target="_blank">A place to lay my thread</a>.<br />

We don't have kool aid here, but a lovely person in the US swapped me kool aid and a 3.5mm circ (also not available here) for some of my mini skeins to add to her BeeKeepers quilt.<br />
<br />
<br />
ohmygosh the smells were amazing! The grape one smells like Hubba Bubba and the black cherry made my mouth water. I don't think I could bring myself to drinking it though (needing a cup of sugar to make!!!) but I will happily sniff it all day.<br />
<br />
These photos are part of a small series I will be doing shortly (when I have finished all the bits I need to do), so you will see these again, but just to show you my results.<br />
<br />
I am also making an 8-ply crocheted hexagon granny-style blanket using <a href="http://crochetincolor.blogspot.co.nz/2013/08/hexagon-pattern.html" target="_blank">this pattern</a> I found. So I had some 8ply mini skeins (30m each) that I can get 4 hexagons out of if I am careful. (If I'm not, then its about 3.75 per skein. Will remember that for next time). I will be using black yarn to sew them all totgether, just to make them stand out a little more. They are so fast to whip up!<br />
<br />
This is the black cherry yarn. I thought I had a picture of the finished Grape, but I don't. Will take a picture when they are hexagons just like this. They are making all of my hexagons smell amazing! <br />
<br />

I love the glamour of them. So instead of the usual 3, you will get 4. But aren't they gorgeous?!<br />

Lets just say I made a stupid mistake with the car, and I was at my dads over the weekend fixing it. The car is now working and I can get out of the house again.<br />
<br />
I do have a little update on a WIP though. Thought I would start with this, my crocheted <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/AmieFoster/small-talk-shawl" target="_blank">Small Talk</a> shawl.<br />
It is a <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/small-talk-shawl" target="_blank">free pattern</a> download from Rav. <br />
<br />
The original pattern calls for a light fingering/3ply yarn with a 4mm hook, but I had 2 balls of a really nice green/emerald crochet cotton, so decided to use that with a 3.25mm hook, but it's a Boye hook and it actually ends up being about a 3mm hook.<br />
<br />
Have decided to just continue until I run out of thread, but the problem is, I have <del>lost</del> misplaced the 2nd ball of cotton. I am almost finished my first, so it has gone into hibernation until I can recover the 2nd ball. A bit of a shame, but I never intended for it to be a quick project. I knew it would be a long haul, so I am suprisingly ok with not knowing where it is.<br />
<br />
<br />
But here is where I am up to. My leaf count is 7 in each section. With the second ball I estimate at least 10 leaves. I don't think I will do the border the pattern calls for. Not that it isn't nice, I just don't like fringey things.<br />
<br />
